Can you buy narrow stairlifts?
Do you have a narrow staircase? are you worried you wont get one to fit?
While conducting research is essential when purchasing a new stairlift, it’s important to recognize that there’s no one-size-fits-all solution that caters to the mobility needs of every individual. Every UK home is unique, and factors such as narrow doorways, irregularly shaped hallways, and small rooms can create challenges when moving bulky furniture in and out of the property. However, the good news is that whether your house has a straight or curved staircase, there are indoor stairlifts available to fit it, including compact models designed for narrow staircases. Read on for more information on their availability.

Can a stairlift be shortened?
During the consultation and home visit, brand new stairlifts are measured and fitted to your stairs, making it unnecessary to shorten a new stairlift. However, if you are purchasing a second-hand stairlift, it may be necessary to shorten the track and hinge rail to fit your staircase, depending on whether it is straight or curved. Trained engineers will perform this process to ensure the ongoing safety and reliability of your stairlift. Stairlift installation is typically quick and easy, causing minimal disruption to your home, regardless of who supplied and installed the stairlift.
How wide do stairs need to be for a stairlift?
A stairlift can be installed on any width of staircase as long as there is a wall or rail on one side to which a track can be fitted. UK building regulations require a rail on at least one side for flights of stairs less than one metre wide and on both sides for wider staircases. While there is no minimum width for a staircase, it is unlikely that the primary staircase in a household will be too narrow to fit a compact stairlift. Even the perch seat solution can navigate most narrow stairs.
