Different types of stairlift
A guide to which stairlifts are available to suit you and your home.
There are two main types of stairlifts: straight and curved. Curved stairlifts are custom made to fit the shape of your stairs, which makes them more expensive and less likely to be available as reconditioned models. Most stairlift controls are easy to use and can be set up for left or right-handed users. To try out different types of stairlifts and learn more about them, you can visit a disabled living center, mobility center, or manufacturer showroom. You can also try asking someone you know who has a stairlift about their experience and possibly try it out yourself. While their needs may not be exactly the same as yours, you can still get an idea of the potential benefits and drawbacks.

Seated stairlifts for straight staircases
If you have a straight staircase, a seated stairlift may be a suitable option for you. These types of stairlifts run along a straight rail and typically have a seat attached, either fixed or drop-down. Because they only require a straight rail, they are generally the easiest and most affordable type to install. However, it is important to consider the width of your staircase, as narrow staircases may not be suitable. Additionally, you may need to consider the placement of doors at the top of the staircase, which could potentially obstruct the stairlift. If your staircase is mostly straight, but has a slight curve at the top, it may be possible to purchase a straight stairlift with a “bridging platform” to allow the lift to reach the landing. When choosing a stairlift, you will also need to decide where you want the lift to “park” – either at the top or bottom of the staircase. Most stairlifts run on batteries that recharge automatically when the lift returns to its designated parking spot and charger.
Seated stairlifts for curved staircases
If a stairlift is required to navigate around a corner or bend in a staircase, it is classified as a curved stairlift. These types of stairlifts require custom-made rails that are tailored to fit the specific shape of your staircase. As a result, curved stairlifts tend to be more expensive than straight stairlifts. As a rough estimate, the cost of a curved stairlift may double for each additional corner or bend in the staircase.
Other types of stairlift
There are several types of stairlifts that are less common, and are usually used in situations where a straight or curved stairlift is not suitable.
Standing or perching stairlifts: These types of stairlifts can be used for narrow staircases that do not have enough room for a seated lift. The headroom of the staircase must be high enough to accommodate the user’s standing body. These lifts may be suitable for individuals who have difficulty bending their knees, such as those with severe osteoarthritis. Some standing stairlifts also have a small ledge to help the user maintain their balance. However, standing stairlifts may not be appropriate for everyone. They typically have grab rails attached, but if you experience dizziness or do not have the physical strength to stand for a few minutes, it may be dangerous to use one.
Vertical “through-floor” lifts: These lifts allow you to move from one floor of your home to another through a hole in the ceiling or floor, such as from the living room to the bedroom. The track of the lift is attached to the wall. These lifts are more commonly used by wheelchair users who are unable to transfer safely to a stairlift seat. They may also be an option if your staircase is not suitable for a traditional stairlift, such as if it is too narrow or if it is a spiral staircase. However, vertical lifts are the most expensive type to install, as they require significant building work to create a suitable hole, install the lift, and make repairs afterwards.
Outdoor stairlifts: These are similar to indoor straight and curved stairlifts, but are made with weather-resistant materials to withstand outdoor use. They may be used on outdoor steps leading to the front door of a property or down to a garden.
